Today is a day that I have dreaded for a long ass time. I havenât spoken to either of my parents in five years. Five. My mom didnât attend my wedding even though I called her and sent an invitation. My dad called and left voice messages since I never changed my number, but I didnât have the energy to talk to him either. Iâm assuming he Googled me and found out where I worked because he started sending letters to my job for me. I never opened any of them, but I kept them. I donât know why. I just feel like itâs a bunch of lies in them, and I donât want to have any more ill feelings towards him.
Syn is very supportive of my decision not to open the letters, although he encourages me to open them. He said that it could be some very important information in them. I mean, he could be cursing me out for having him arrested⦠I donât know. Iâm just in a place where I have forgiven him for the part he played in having Jerrodâs ass taken. My mom is a different story. I havenât talked to her, but for every birthday and Motherâs Day, I send her flowers and a card. I donât get a response though. I also sent her pictures of the kids. She didnât respond, but like Syn always told me, at least Iâm doing my part, and I shouldnât feel bad about it.
âAdoree, baby! Are you ready? You blanked out on me,â Syn said, breaking up my thoughts.
âYeah, I guess,â I solemnly replied.
âBaby, you know we donât have to do this. We can do this another time.â
I shook my head slowly from side to side. It was either now or never. He called a couple of years ago and left on my voicemail that he put me on his visitation list, and that I had to fill out some papers online. Against my better judgment, I filled them out for Syn and I because I could never face that man alone.
Syn got out and opened my door for me. I had been putting off coming back to Louisiana for the longest. I was going to try and go see my mom as well, and I prayed that she didnât get out of line. I stepped out the car and took a deep breath.
The minute I walked into the prison, I felt like the walls started closing in. I kept deep breathing, so I wouldnât have an anxiety attack. We got signed in and searched within twenty minutes. They lead us to a big room where other prisoners were meeting their family members. I swear it felt like all eyes were on me. We sat at the table waiting to see my dad. Syn patted my shaking leg, then interlocked his hand with mine.
Five minutes later, my dad came walking into the room. My heart stopped momentarily as I took him in. He still looked the same, but bigger.
